MLB Playoff Odds Check: Where the Market and the Standings Disagree
With a month left, the standings tell one story and the probabilities tell another. The gaps between them are where September betting value lives.

A month out, the standings and the playoff-odds models are telling usefully different stories — and for a bettor, the disagreement is the whole point. Two live examples from the races we've been tracking.
Case one: the Twins, and what a crash overshoots
Minnesota's week is the cleanest illustration of how fast probability moves when the standings barely do. Five losses in six games took the Twins from 39.4% to 10.6% — a four-fold collapse in playoff probability off a single terrible week, because in late August every game carries compounding weight. The lesson runs both directions: when a probability moves that violently, the futures market often overshoots the same way, and the question worth asking is whether a 64-70 team with a soft closing stretch is really a 10% team — or whether recency just repriced them past the math.
Case two: the wild-card scrum, where records lie
The AL's third wild card remains a knot of teams around .500, and this is the spot where standings genuinely mislead. Two teams with identical records can carry very different true odds — one has a friendly September schedule and a healthy rotation, the other has neither. The models price that; the standings don't. When the market's number on a team diverges from what its record implies, the schedule is usually the reason, and it rewards the bettor who actually looks at it.
The framework for September
Three questions before touching any playoff future this month:
- What does the model say vs. the seed line? A team two games back can be a coin flip or a long shot depending on who it's chasing and who it still plays.
- Who does the remaining schedule favor? September is won on the soft stretches. Head-to-head games between contenders are double-weight — every one moves two teams' odds at once.
- Is the price stale or panicked? Books reprice futures slower than models after a big week, in both directions. The gap between a Tuesday probability and a Tuesday price is the actual bet.
No team in a race this tight is a safe play — that's what makes the month worth watching with the odds page open next to the standings.
