The Minnesota Twins are promoting Walker Jenkins, their top prospect, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reported Thursday. At 21 years and six months, Jenkins becomes one of the youngest position players the franchise has called up since Joe Mauer debuted just shy of his 21st birthday.
The timing isn't subtle. Jenkins spent 2026 hitting .306 with a .931 OPS, 11 homers and 27 RBIs at Triple-A — and then caught fire in August, going .415 with a 1.293 OPS and seven home runs in 16 games. Minnesota needs to clear spots on both the active and 40-man rosters to make it official.
Why now
A team promotes its crown-jewel prospect in late August for one of two reasons: it's chasing something, or it's ready to see the future.
